Speed Measurement Labs Overview
 |
 |
| The 2004 Radar
Detector Shoot Out tested a number of new traffic
enforcement and counter measure devices. Although Speed
Laboratories has not prepared a overall rating for the items
tested, this is Radar Roy's overview and his
recommendations! |
Radar Detectors - Top
Performers
Over $300.00 Price Range
Carl Fors gave the "Top Dog" award for detectors in the over
$300.00 price dollar category to the Escort
8500 X50 for the following reasons:
It was the only detector to report constant on and instant on
radar over the hill at the 2.5 cone. It consistenly alerted to the
MPH's Bee III RDD POP Mode. It was able to defeat the new Spectre
III RDD and it tied in the Long Ranger test to alerting as an
outstanding 11 miles from the radar guns. The X50 also lends itself
to easily interface with our motorcycle defense systems.
Under $200 Price Range
There was no clear cut winner in this category as each manufature
won in some category. The
Cobra 9700 was the Long Ranger champ seeing X band at 10.7 miles and K
band at 8.8. The PNI Silver
Bullet was invisible to the new Spectre III and the Whistler
73 displayed superior range from the 2 mile cone during the
instant on and constant on radar testing.
Laser Jamming
Although this years testing of laser jammers was only between the
two Blinders, the Blinder
M-20 and the Blinder
M-40. They were tested on a number of different vehicles
that included passenger cars, full size pick-up trucks and
motorcycles.
The Blinder continues to the the only laser jammer that can jam
100% of all laser guns.
The Blinder M-40 maybe bit of an overkill for your
standard passenger car, and for those installations Radar Roy recommends the Blinder
M-20.
