2006 Active Laser Jamming
|
Active Laser JammingOver years, Radar Roy has found several products that are cheap "knock offs" that promise superior performance, this year was no exception. Prior to the SML test, Radar Roy received two new laser jammers to bring to the test that were provided by the manufacture. The first was a laser jammer manufactured in New Zealand and was illegally using the product name "The Blinder". The real Blinder product is manufactured in Denmark and holds patents and trademarks on the Blinder name. Not only was the Blinder name "Stolen" but we found that the manual was also copied almost word for word. The second was a laser jammer called "Laser Jammer II" that is manufactured in Taiwan by ALF Co. LTD. The Laser Jammer II's laser heads almost were identical in design as the Blinder's. The jammer came with a DVD of tests that the company performed with several laser guns. Buyer beware, as there are still many other "copycat" laser jammers that are now emerging onto the marketplace. Most, if not all have illegally copied established laser jammers. Patent lawsuits are expected to follow. This is typical in consumer electronics. The two jammer "knock off's" were tested against the two, most established and recognized laser jammers in the industry today, the Lidatek Dual LE-30 and the Blinder M-40 Extreme. As we have seen during this test and those of previous years, police laser gun transmissions are very narrow and detectors have a difficult, if not impossible task, of providing any advanced warning. The sale of police laser guns are soaring especially in traffic dense metropolitan areas. Laser guns are now for sale that include a digital camera, providing visual evidence of a speeding infraction. These problems have led to the introduction of laser counter measures, a camouflaged word for laser jammers. Although there is a federal prohibition for radar jammers, there are no such federal laws against operating a laser jamming device. Laser is controlled by the US Food and Drug Administration for eye safety; whereas, radar is controlled by the Federal Communications Commission.
Court precedent and officer training recommend and command that laser may not be used for issuing a speeding ticket past 1,000 feet due to the divergence of the laser's beam. SML used the three most popular police laser guns the LTI Ultralyte LR 200, Stalker LZ-1 and Kustom Signals Pro Laser III. Also used was the new Pro Lite laser gun and the Laser Atlanta in both stealth and non stealth mode These guns account for 98% of all laser guns sold in North America. A cone was placed at 1,000 feet and one at 500 feet. Test vehicles approached the 1,000 foot cone at a speed of approximately 70 MPH and counted down, "three, two, one" to the cone The officer then fired the laser gun. This was then repeated at the 500 foot cone. This test was repeated three times for each laser gun. The following is a percentage of jam for all three runs. "AP" signifies At Front Plate, "HL" signifies at Headlamp To accurately report your distance from a radar gun, the radar detector warnings should increase as you approach the radar guns location. The below graph should not be an indication of reception and/or performance, but only as a guide to signal strength displayed by that individual detector.
An IR video camera with monitor was used during the test to validate that the jammer heads were properly activating when the unit began its jamming sequence. * The testing of the Blinder M-40 was performed during a subsequent day of testing by the SML staff. |
