2006 SWS and Safety Alert

Safety Alert and
Safety Warning System Testing

Once touted as being the "Future of Highway Safety" Innovative Technology of America developed the Safety Warning System (SWS) and Cobra Electronics developed the Safety Alert.

The idea behind both of these systems is that transmitters would be installed on the highways, which had the ability to broadcast messages to devices installed in vehicles. These messages would warn drivers of hazards on the highway such as weather, road construction or notify them of landmarks.

Many radar detectors companies jumped on board, installing the ability to receive these messages into their radar detectors.

Unfortunately, many of the state highway departments have never seen the value of these systems and have yet to obtain the transmitters.

Regardless, it was decided to test the radar detectors ability to detect and accurately report the alert.

Both systems transmit at a frequency of 24.100 GHz and should be interpreted as K band by any radar detector.

Detectors that have Safety Alert, should warn the the driver with the appropriate message. Detectors that have SWS should warn the driver with its appropriate message.

The test vehicles were placed 1,000 feet from the safety transmitters.

K alert means that the detector reported the alert as K band radar.

EVA means that the detector reported the correct transmission of an Emergency Vehicle Alert.

RHA means that the detector reported the correct transmission of an Road Hazard Ahead.
