2007 Laser Detector Tests
ᅠ |
Laser Detection TestLaser enforcement is becoming more and more popular, as an example; Albuquerque New Mexico is in the process of replacing all their radar guns with laser and the State of Hawaii does not have one radar gun, all their guns are laser.
It is estimated that today there are over 60,000 police laser guns in use today within the USA. The reason is simple, radar guns cannot signal out an individual vehicle as well as laser can. These guns transmit a beam of infrared light at a frequency of 330 terahertz. This light beam is only 18 inches wide at 500 feet and gets smaller as you approach the officer. This narrow light beam is aimed by the officer to a reflective area on your vehicle, such as your headlamps or front license plate. The officer can only use the laser gun while he is stationary. The first round of tests were performed at the 1000 foot and the 500 foot cone, with the laser gun pointed directly on the windshield (not a common location for police officers to aim laser guns) all of the radar detectors alerted. The second round of tests the officer shot three times at the front license plate area (a common target area) at 1000 and 500 feet, the following is a result of this test.
