Radar Detector Detector (RDD) Testing

Radar detector detectors (RDD) were introduced over 15 years ago by Kustom radar with their introduction of the VG2. A short time later, Beltronics introduced technology capable of defeating the VG2 in their radar detectors and other manufactures followed their suit.

Five years ago, a new system was developed by Applied Concepts with their Spectre, that was able to sniff out all radar detectors. Then in 2006, Beltronics introduced the STi, the first radar detector that can defeat all known RDD units including the Spectre.

During this test a VG2 and a Spectre III RDD was operated by a police officer.

Test Radar

Three separate tests were run on each detector listed.

Detected indicates if the RDD detected the presence of the radar detector during the test.

Distance indicates the distance in feet the radar detector was detected.

* Neither the Whistler Pro 78 or the Whistler 690 are designed to defeat the Spectre, therefore a subsequent test was done several weeks after this test by Radar Roy. During this test each of the Whistler models were detected at an average distance of 385 feet.

It has been noted in previous tests by both SML and Radar Roy that extended use of the Spectre in high temperatures do have effect on reducing the performance of Spectre.
