Top Rated Radar Detectors
Do you want the best in radar detection at the best price?
Two of the questions I’m asked frequently are:
- Which detector is the best radar detector?
- What’s the best price I can get on a radar detector?
As a result, I’ve done several things:
One – I have created the Radar Roy’s V.I.P. Club, where you can be assured that you will get the best price.
Two – I have created this page outlining what I feel are the best radar detectors for you to choose from.
Three – I’ve published my Radar Detector Buyers Guide,
which I offer as my free gift to members of my exclusive buyers club.
This guide goes into much more detail on selecting the
detector that best fits your needs, and offers many useful tips on how
to maximize its use.
Best Radar Detector Overview
Basically, there are two factors that you should take into consideration
when selecting the radar detector that is best suited for your needs:
the range and sensitivity of the detector, and the filtering capabilities
of the detector.
Range and Sensitivity
Your #1 consideration when choosing a radar detector is the range and sensiticity of the detector.
The formula I’ve developed for this is the 7X Rule.
This means that your detector should have at least 7 times the range of the police radar gun's capture range.
So why is it so important to have a detector that can detect signals from so far away?
Well, because of Instant on radar.
have the option of putting their radar gun into what is called “standby
mode,” which allows them to delay activating the gun until they have a
speeder within target range.
If your radar detector has at least
this 7X capture range, you have a greater chance of detecting the
officer's gun while it is still being activated, and as a result a
greater chance of avoiding a ticket.
Another important feature to consider is the filtering capabilities of the detector.
An inferior radar detector will alert to other radar detectors within close proximity and to the FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar sensors equipped on many newer cars.
Due to these factors, I have categorized the detectors that
appear on the bottom of this page as being good, better, or best.
Best Radar Detectors
The best radar detector made today is the Passport Max.
The Passport Max is unique based upon its new M5 antenna design, which
uses the same technology as NASA and the US Military in order to sniff out
the signature of police radar through a computer algorithm. This
technology is called Digital Signal Processing, which enables the Max to
scan faster and more accurately than any other radar detector ever
The result is a detector that will detect radar at over 8 times the capture rate of a police radar gun while filtering out false signals.
Better Radar Detectors
The following detectors that I've ranked in the Better category are all
based on the Escort’s M3 dual antenna design, which makes these
detectors stealth to all radar detector devices, including the Spectre,
and allows for the best off axis detection of any detector.
Those in this category include the Escort Redline, the Beltronics STi Magnum, the Escort 9500ci, and the Beltronics STiR Plus.
Each of these detectors has a range comparable to the Escort Max but suffer slightly in their filtering capabilities.
As a result of this, all the detectors in this category will be prone to sounding a few more false alerts than the Max.
Good Radar Detectors
The radar detectors that I would rank as being in the good range are all based on the Escort’s M4 antenna design and include: the Escort 9500ix, the Passport IQ, the Escort 8500 x50, the Bel Pro 500, and the Bel Pro 300.
The range of these detectors is approximately 7X the capture distance of
a police radar gun, and the filtering of these is also in the good
