Filtering Test

The biggest complaint Radar Roy hears from his customers regarding their past experience with radar detectors is false alerts.

Today, many companies have developed better filtering capabilities, allowing them to reduce many of the false alerts that were so common in older radar detectors, or newer detectors that are cheaply made.

All radar detectors will issue brief, low signal strength alerts as they maybe alerting to other radar detectors or other non law enforcement devices. However a detector that issues a lot of false alerts is worthless as a radar detector, as it will constantly go off!

Valentine 1

The November 22nd 2004 Autoweek magazine also reviewed the new 1.8 version of the Valentine 1 radar detector and referred to it as the "Chicken Little" of radar detectors because of all its false alarms and commented that the average user would end up tuning out all alerts.

Just after Autoweek's report, Radar Roy had received four of the new Valentine 1 units directly from Valentine with the new POP software. He tested these new units and agreed with the Autoweek review and reduced the filtering rating from a nine, to the seven.

In Radar Roy's opinion, the addition of the POP to the Valentine 1, substantially decreased it's filtering capabilities. However when POP is activated on the Escort and/or Bel models, its filtering also is substantially decreased. The difference however, is this: Escort and Beltronics users are allowed to think for themselves and either turn on or turn off POP radar. Valentine have not been allowed this until recently. The Super Stealth 9000 had the lowest filtering rating of any radar detector Radar Roy ever tested. As soon as power was applied to the unit, the radar detector would alert and not stop till it was unplugged.
