The Spectre unmasks radar detectors by sweeping a larger spectrum and a higher frequency than previously possible. The Spectre also sweeps multiple bands.
The first Spectre (Spectre I) was a success and was purchased by police agencies worldwide. All Spectre I models in North America have now been recalled and upgraded to either the Spectre 2 or Spectre 3 model.
Cobra Electronics was the first radar detector manufacturer to challenge the Spectre.
 However, their Cobra 9870 was detected by the Spectre at Speed Measurement Lab's 2003 Radar Detector Shoot Out. (The Cobra also detected the Spectre by giving a "Ka Alert", but not a "Spectre Alert" as intended by the engineers.)
