I-95 Report on the RX65

I had to get this before a trip from Washington DC to south Florida and back on I-95 because of my Mustang GT Convertible is all to easy to let drift above the limit. I have a fantastic sound system too that breeds too much comfort.
Here's what I noticed:
1. The RX-65 was easily heard above higher stereo volumes, the convertible, and heavy exhaust drone.
2. Only about two thirds of police cars have radar on when you see them. This is not a police car detector, but it's a little more relief to know a third aren't using radar at all times.
3. I got nearly every single speed trap laid out on I-95 from DC to Florida. There were two times when I gasped and passed a police car at a 90 degree angle on the side of the road. I can only conclude they did NOT have their radar on and were sleeping while looking like a trap.
4. As far as advanced notice, I'm not a sophisticated user. It gave me enough time to slow down without putting on the brake lights. More time in other situations. I got used to it.
5. I-95 mostly uses K bands of radar.
6. Never ever speed near Florence South Carolina. Its a Charlie Foxtrot of sophisticated radar traps with more than a dozen cars involved. In addition, watch the Georgia/Florida border in Georgia. Massive presence. They like to get you coming over the hill when I-95 makes an overpass.
7. This detector goes off around motels and grocery stores with the radar doors. It's predictable and not that big of a deal.
8. If it goes off, there's a high chance it is right. Half the hits though are high speed encounters with the cops on the other side of the highway.
9. Laser is non-existent. Had a false positive on a survey team using laser. Weird weird noise that freaked me out.
10. Sniffed out all town and city based traps like dog poop. Got ALL of them with zero surprises. St. Augustine was bad with them. Better luck next time smoky bear.

Gives laser falses constantly when driving in the general direction of the sun, if it is bright. Even worse when there is reflected sun off the snow. The unit cannot distinguish. Laser trumps actual radar, so if you're getting radared by the cops, the laser falses will not allow the radar warning, and 'poof', a ticket.

Comments about Beltronics BEL RX65 Radar Detector:
No ground shipping to Hawaii? Really? Fedex and UPS both ship ground to Hawaii, but it is not an option through your website or through a phone order. The shipping with 2nd day air is 1/3 the price of my order.
Are you under the assumption that we all live in grass shacks? Get with the current times, and add ground to Hawaii. I am really disappointed...

Comments about Beltronics BEL RX65 Radar Detector:
This is a superb piece of gear! The Bel RX-65 works superbly in all conditions. Effective in detecting X, K, Ka and even Laser. Radar Roy hit the mark with this one...it is one of the best detectors on the market.

Comments about Beltronics BEL RX65 Radar Detector:
I got this installed as soon as I got it - the coiled smart chord is great, I can easily shut the detector up without having to reach up and hit it and the coiled design keeps the chord from being messy.
I leave it on AutoScan primarily and it does a fantastic job - still get some pesky K alerts from auto door openers but you can always put it in City to cut that out more in an area with a lot of false alarms.
I haven't had it on the highway yet but I'm sure it'll knock my Cobra out of the running as I've already experience half the false alarms in the city as I did before.

Comments about Beltronics BEL RX65 Radar Detector:
Excellent detector, pretty much neck and neck with my escort red line, except on 35.5. One feature I really like is that it resets it self every time its hit with laser! So if you have veil etc you can tell more clearly how effective its working!

Comments about Beltronics BEL RX65 Radar Detector:
I use the RX-65 every day on a 24 mile one way commute.
The device can see around corners by catching radar scatter off of guard rails and other metal objects.
Some complain of lack of discrimination. If you pay enough attention you can detect Police speed traps versus Door Openers, 'drones' and other false alarms. The pattern of illumination will "seem" different. You just get a feel for how a police speed trap "feels" versus other sources.
Only reason I'd purchase an STi is to prevent the device from being detected by Radar Detector Detection Devices. Everywhere I drive radars are legal so the RX-65 is fine with me.

Q1: Dear Radar Roy, I am in the process of buying a radar detector from your web site, however, I have a question that I was hoping you could help me with. First, I have read just about everything on the site and have been wanting to buy for a long time now. Since heard so many good reviews from owners and sellers about Beltronics so I decided that I wanted a Bel detector. I am torn as to whether I should purchase the Bel RX65 or the Bel Vector 955. If it were just a couple dollars between the two it wouldn't be so much of a problem but we are talking about $150 difference. I want to be well protected but I'd hate to think that I am wasting money somewhere and its the difference between a 1/2 weeks pay and a full weeks pay. Between the two detectors is there a big difference in range, detectability or something that outshines the other? ANY help you can offer would be GREATLY appreciated!
A: Yes, there is a difference and that is in the tuning of the detectors and the programming. The main difference is that the 955 is tuned more for international use rather then the US on the ka bands. If you're strictly going to use the detector within the US, I would recommend the RX65. Another advantage of the RX65 is that you can program it for multiple boggie alerts. This isn't a big deal unless you are an advanced user.
Q2: I too am in the market for a good detector. I've been using a friends Valentine-1 on road trips, and Im starting to like that unit.I've been reading your site, and now I dont know what direction to go. My needs are; I like to drive fast on highways and open roads, I like the 360 coverage, and I like the false detection programs as well. I see a differences in pricing. I appreciate any assistance you can give on this matter.
A: At Radarbusters.com, we have tested and found that the high end Beltronics and Escort units simply have more advanced features that are as good if not better than Valentine 1, such as the GPS integration, that offer a higher return on your investment. If you want the best range, sensitivity, and filtering of false alerts, go with a 9500ix. Any Escort or Beltronics unit will perform....but if you want the best, go with the 9500ix.
