just started using it, so can't comment much on the performance, but a couple of notes: it would be better not to have "escort" in big white letters on the front - for security purposes...and I would have liked to have more information on how much of the receiver needs to be exposed to the rear of the car to pick up signals from the rear.

I have owned a lot of radar detectors over the years & I learned 11 years ago that when it comes to radar detectors you get what you pay for. So the more you spend the better the detector. The truth is if it's not close to $400 or above, you're wasting your money. I am not a fanboy of any products, I am just speaking from experience. Escort & Bel (Beltronics) are the best you can buy period. My last 8 detectors have been Escort & Bel, the first 4 Bel & the last 4 Escort. Oh the reason I've gone through 8 detectors in 11 years is because I was so impressed with the one I had, that I would buy the new released model & give the other one to my wife. Eventually I just started selling the old one on eBay. My last detector was a 9500ix & it is so freaking awesome I've had it for 4 years. I decided it was time to try something new and that's how I ended up with the new SmartRadar. This thing is a dream. Its state of the art, has amazing detection range (some people have reported 9 miles!), its behind the rear view mirror so it's out of sight, it integrates via Bluetooth with your Android or iPhone (which is the coolest thing I've ever seen btw) & it can be upgraded to the lastest software to keep up with new features & improvements in the technology via a USB cable & downloaded Detector Tools management software from Escort's website.
Now the bad part about this detector, power source. You only have two options direct wire from a powered rear view mirror or the fuse box. My parents have a 2010 Hyundai Sante Fe it took 5 mins to do. I have a 2007 Sante Fe it's been 2 days & I'm still working on it. If you have a 2010 or newer car you won't have an issue, anything else take it to a car repair or any place that installs car stereos & get it done.
Ok now a word about RadarBusters.com. Vast array of products, great pricing, valuable reviews & knowledge, but what really sets them apart...Customer Service! I called Escort over an issue that was 100% their fault at manufacturing, they refused to help me & told me I needed to call whoever I bought it from. Well honestly this was just wrong because this was an Escort screw up not RadarBusters. I called RadarBusters customer service & explained the problem & what Escort had said. That's all it took, the rep, issued a call tag to have it picked up & arranged for a replacement to be sent to me immediately & was incredibly friendly the entire time. I will only buy Escort, because they're the best in the business, I will only buy from RadarBusters for the same reason.

Quick service, easy install (15 minutes). Used Escort/Passport for 20+ years, this is nice on new vehicle so hidden except for small display. Hooked right into rear view mirror power plug.

I have been driving with the Smart Radar for about 10 days now. I also have a 9500ix detector that I have had for a couple years. I find the performance to be equal to the 9500ix.
Installation was simple - you are given 2 different cords. 1 is a cord that can allow you to tap into the power in your rear-view mirror if you have that. I did not in the vehicle I put this in, so I was left with installing with the included direct wire option. It was very easy to tap into the fuse box and run the wire up along the molding to the rear view mirror area.
I mounted the detector directly behind the mirror, making it invisible to me in the car. The display included a mounting piece to mount to the top of the mirror, however I mounted mine on the little "knob" below the rear view mirror (the one that you flip to darken the mirror). Since I never use that, I simply used the included tape on the display, and it stuck perfectly to that. Gives it a very professional installation look.
This also comes ready to use with Escort Live! and it connects via bluetooth to my iPhone with the Escort Live! app. This part is very cool. I get complete control of the detectors features and all of the benefits of Live! for blocking false alerts.
I have always been very happy with the 9500ix, its the best detector available in my opinion. This addition to my second car was a great choice.
