Q1: Is there a display that says how much charge is left or when it is fully charged to know to take it off the charger since too long of a charge can shorten batter life? Is it possible to use standard batteries instead of the rechargable batteries and if so, what size (cust prefers standard batteries because they have longer charges)? When left on, is there a sound to remind the user so that if it is left on on accident it can be shut off? Is there an auto-off feature to prevent this?
A: This detector does require 4 AA NiMH Rechargeable Batteries. There is an selectible battery saver to assist in preventing the batter to go dead.
Q2: I've had this detector for a while now and I'm having a problem with the unit not staying on. I've even put in new batteries and still have the problem. Is there anything that can be done to fix this?
A:
I occasionally hear from customers about the 1788 powering off with no warning, even after putting new batteries in the detector. Go to the manual and look in the OPERATION section. There is a sub-category called Battery Saver Mode. It explains how this feature works. I suggest you experiment a little with these modes and determine what works best for you. Read details below...
Battery Saver Mode
The Vehicle Battery Saver Mode automatically shuts off the detector if you forget to turn it off. The timer is reset if the detector is turned off, the optional power cord is unplugged or any button is pressed before the timer has expired. The detector will alert you with an audible and visual warning before it shuts off. This auto off function can be programmed for the following: Off, 1, 2, or 3 hours. During this warning you can reset the timer by pressing any button. If the unit has automatically turned itself off, press the Power button to turn the unit back on. You can manually engage the Battery Saver Mode by pressing and holding the City button until one beep is heard. Refer to “Option Select Mode” for instructions for changing the Battery Saver Mode settings.
