Motorcycle Radar Detectors

Radar Roy is an avid motorcyclist and he knows how important it is to have proper protection when you ride. Roy strongly feels that part of this protection is a proper radar detector for your motorcycle.

Radar Roy has been featured in American Iron, Two Wheel Tuner and Super Street Bike magazines for his knowledge and Roy has two other website's featuring these two articles.

StealthHog.com: American Iron featured Roy's 2003 Harley Peace Officer's Special Edition in the January 2004 issue. On this website Radar Roy shows how he outfitted his Ultra Glide with an Escort 8500 X50, the H.A.R.D. System, the Blinder M-20 laser jammer, and mounting systems.

SteathStreetBike.com: Radar Roy was challenged by Speed Measurement Laboratories and Super Street Bike magazine to trick out a R1 motorcycle and make it stealth to the radar and laser guns of the El Paso Police Department.

The following are Radar Roy's top picks of radar detectors and accessories to stealth out YOUR motorcycle.

Radar Detector Selection

The first and most important part is selecting the right radar detector for your motorcycle.

#1 - Escort 8500 X50:
The Escort 8500 X50 is Roy's top pick for a radar detector on a motorcycle.

Roy has found that the 8500 stands up a little better to the vibrations that your radar detector will encounter while on your motorcycle then the Beltronics RX65.

The 8500 was the Motortrend Radar Detector of the year in 2004 and is also one of Roy's top picks.

Next, select the mounting system, weather protection device and the external warning system for your Escort 8500 X50

#2 - Whistler Cruisader:
The Whistler Cruisader is the all in one package that contains everything you need for your motorcycle.

The control head comes with a mounting system that fastens to your handlebar, and the external radar/laser antenna mounts to the front area on your bike.

The Cruisader also comes with its own heads-up-display unit.

Whistler designed the H.U.D. receiver to mount inside the helmet, under the padding. Some of Roy's clients who wear full face helmets, have complained that the LED cable is not long enough, to allow the receivers mounting to the outside of their helmets.

The Cruisader is an affordable all in one motorcycle radar detector unit for your motorcycle with acceptable range and sensitivity.

Mounting Systems

DON'T use the automotive windshield mounting brackets that came with your radar detector to mount your radar detector to your motorcycle! If you do, Roy assures you that it is going to fall off your bike and be smashed into little pieces as the semi behind you runs it over.

Radar Roy has specialized motorcycle mounts for your radar detector, GPS, MP3, cell phone and perhaps any other gizmo that you can figure out to install.

These high quality motorcycle mounts are made with bullet aluminum and use industrial Velcro pads to keep your radar detector secure.

Weather Protection Device

Radar Detectors are NOT waterproof!

When it rains protect them or remove them from your motorcycle.

Radar Roy sells the Radar Box which is a lexan waterproof enclosure for your radar detector.

A less expensive alternative and the one Radar Roy uses, is a child's shower cap.

Some of these child's shower caps are available in clear plastic so you can still see your radar detector, while protecting it.

External Warning Device

Your radar detector will alert when you least expect it to and chances are your not going to hear or see the alerts from it.

This is why you should consider an external warning device for your motorcycle radar detector and these are Roy's top picks.

#1 - H.A.R.D. System
The wireless H.A.R.D. System from Legal Speeding is Roy's top pick for an external warning system for your motorcycle.

The H.A.R.D. System's transmitter plugs into your radar detector and the receiver mounts to your helmet.

When the radar detector alerts, the transmitter sends a signal wirelessly to the receiver and a LED light flashes, alerting that your detector is activated.

The H.A.R.D. System comes in two versions

Escort/Bel Version: Will work with the following radar detectors: Escort 8500 X50, Escort 8500, Escort 7500, Beltronics RX65, Beltronics STi.

(Will also work with the Solo II if it is hard wired to the motorcycle)

Valentine Version: Works with the Valentine 1.

#2 - SportsVue HUD
The SportsVue HUD Model MC-2 is the first heads-up-display that combines radar detector warnings along with speed, rpm and gear selection.

The HUD is also wireless and obtains its information from a small transmitter that is on your motorcycle that is connected to your radar detector.

#3 - Screamer
The Screamer is an amplified radar detector warning system that mounts to your motorcycle.

For those who do not wear helmets, or for those who do not like things attached to their helmets, this is a great alternative,
