The Direct Wire Cord provides a more permanent and concealed mounting option for your Escort or Bel radar detector. By tapping directly into a switched 12-volt power supply, this essential accessory will prevent loose cords from cluttering up your dash.

The Direct Wire SmartCord is another mounting solution for Escort and Bel radar detectors. Like the standard Direct Wire Cord, the SmartCord taps into your switched 12-volt power supply to free your dash from the cord clutter. It offers additional advantages as well. The SmartCord features a built-in alert lamp, pilot light, and convenient mute button so you can stay alert while keeping your focus on the road.

The Add-A-Circuit turns one fuse slot into two. This handy accessory plugs into any fuse slot, even if the slot has a fuse installed, and provides protection for both circuits. Ideal for use with the standard Direct Wire Cord or the Direct Wire SmartCord.

The Visor Clip Mount allows you to attach your radar detector directly to your sun visor. This accessory will keep your windshield free from mounts and other obstructions, resulting in a clear view of the road.

The Escort Accessory Kit includes a carrying case to protect your radar detector when not in use. You'll also receive an extra windshield mounting bracket and two extra sets of extra suction cups in case your originals become worn or damaged.

I live in a state where use of radar detectors is prohibited. My purchase of the Beltronics STi (STi)is intended for interstate highway use. My experience with radar detectors is slight, but my decade plus military experience provides insight and understanding in the area of measure-countermeasure and the employed tactics.

Packaging: The STi arrived in packaging with the expected metal case and accessories. The case is not designed to be mil-spec, but it makes an easy transport of the essentials you would need when preparing for travel or commute. The case contained the STi, power cord and mounting brackets. Instructions are simple and easy to read; they are useful for buttons that have duel functions/selector switches. The case makes easy transport and I perceived the bundling as a positive factor that allowed me to take essentials. Keep it simple – nice design and packaging.

Initial use and impressions: My travels started from home, traveling to South Florida. Use was prohibited from the start, but I reviewed my intended installation areas and prepared for power cord management. The supplied mounting hardware was sufficient and allowed simple, one-handed relocation of the device. The power cord was also sufficient (both in length and durable construction). The power cord’s indicator lamps (Power and alert) were very useful subsequently during the trip. The construction of the device is superior to other detectors that I have used in my life. While this is a not quantifiable, the detector seems to be well constructed, heavy in relation to size and sufficiently rugged to withstand daily use. I believe the STi housing would survive a decent drop (from hand carrying onto concrete) however I cannot speak to the survivability of the internal circuits and components. This is an electronic item (sensitive) treat it as such.

Initially I believe the suction mounting device to be inferior, but soon realized that other than the ability to relocate the detector while driving with one hand the STi’s mounting offered slight shock and vibration dampening during travels.

Without an ability to test the device prior to use, I installed in a central, higher position and within my view as the driver. I preferred both audible and visual alerts. Traveling at the posted speed limits and with traffic, I was able to discover and learn the detectors sensitivity. Leaving the STi in ‘autoscan’ mode, I was quickly able to discern threat levels, employment tactics of the various highway patrols and more importantly the reaction of other drivers to the tactics of law enforcement.

My initial alert was in flat North Carolina terrain, highway speed, wooded areas on both sides of the highway and on the median. My transport was a smaller SUV type (MB ML Series), but a large radar signature with many reflective surfaces. The roadway was predominately straight and no heavy vehicular traffic (and no cargo haulers to block signal). Weather was clear, good visibility temp approx 40F, high-pressure stable 30+mmHg. The initial alert was 2-bar and this was presented in both audible forms (including voice) and visual alert. I could not confirm source of alert. Continuing along highway approximately another .25 miles, the alert grew in intensity. Still no visual confirmation of source. Another .25 miles and the highway rounded a slight bend – all the time signal strength is increasing. I confirmed visually confirmed stationary source from the median and seeming to monitor traffic (of which I was a part). Alert increased to maximum before I had visual confirmation.

Long to short: I was able to regulate my position in relation to other cars before they were aware of the radar presence. During my 2000 mile trip, I detected numerous signals. Each time I had ample advance warning to regulate my position with traffic well before the detected signal increased beyond 50% indication by the STi.

I believe that I detected the various signals before they were a threat to me. I do not believe that I experienced a direct ‘instant on’ threat directed at me. (Once I did read an instant 100% reading, but due to traffic conditions and my speed and positioning, I believed that the target of that radar signal was another vehicle.) I never experienced a laser alert.

I was quickly able to learn and adapt to the various reading and alerts. Low-intensity signals when passing a shopping or otherwise inhabited area were quickly discernable from high-intensity threats that were traveling with traffic, against traffic or stationary along the roadway.

At night, I prefer visual alerts with low audible, but experimented with the unit’s display off. Running ‘Dark’, my initial question was if the unit was actually working. The STi’s display powers on and displays the start-up procedure/checks – then reverts to a ‘dark’ status. When powering off, the unit will likewise activate the display for the ‘powering off’ procedure. The power cord was a plus in that the status of the detector (on or off) was determined by a lamp at the base of the power cord. There was also a mute button and an alert indicator. These features were ‘nice to have’ when running ‘dark’.

Overall, I believe that this detector is well constructed. It apparently detected various signals well before these signals could have been a threat to me or other drivers around me. This allowed me to regulate my position for safety well before others began to react (at times in a panic). The accessories provide me with an ability to hard-mount and wire to a vehicle or to remain mobile. While my use has not been long, just over 4 weeks, with proper care and maintenance I do not foresee problems with unit longevity due to solid construction.

While I rated the unit a '4' - I think that it is best of breed. I would like to see external antenna with separation for placement in the vehicle. This STi unit plus, directional signal source location, with GPS location and tracking and integration-interfacing into standard automaker software would rate a perfect score. This said, I reiterate that it is best of breed in my opinion.

I would like to know about recalibration and the long term effect of temperature on circuitry and unit sensitivity.

I’ve used the Bel RX65 for years. It’s one of the finest detectors on the market, and half the price of the Bel STI. I bought the STI because I pass through Virginia and DC a few times a year. The quality of reception of the STI is about the same as the RX65, BUT the controls are ridiculous. Add the RX65 controls to the STI and lower the price by fifty dollars, easily done by putting it in a cardboard box instead of a useless miniature suitcase, and you’ll have a real winner.

Comments about Beltronics STi Driver Radar Detector:

I drive a 99 Pontiac Trans Am, so needless to say I love speed but not the police in Va and DC. Which I have to deal with on a regular basis. Was tired of gettin tagged by them so I decided to try out this one after much research. It might give some false readings but its better to have a false one then none at all. It gives a great audio sound which is easily heard over my engine, exhaust, and even my stereo. depending on the terrain. Meaning how much of a crest you have over a hill. It still gives very good warning. Long straight aways it is great. I have read others reviews on the heat factor, so I never leave it inside on a hot day. Just in case it does overheat, but during driving I have no complaints. The only real issue I have is with the windshield mount. With the weight of the unit and the angle on my windshield. It doesnt mount level. One fix I use is to use the rear view mirror to support the back to keep it level, plus hide the unit from the eyes of the state and local police. Just like with everything you have to be on guard, but since I got the unit. I have seen the police before they have seen me. Definately love getting one over on a state that makes these units illegal but still are allowed to use their equipment to nab you.

Comments about Beltronics STi Driver Radar Detector:

I have the STi-R model and have made three cross-country trips. The range is incredible. I picked up radar from so far away that it took a few minutes to come up to where the cop was hiding, or meet up with the the cop approaching me from the opposite direction. Although it doesn't have a receiver facing the back of the car, I was able to pick up cops coming up behind me from the reflection of their signal on vehicles in front of me. This is an expensive unit, but it is well worth the investment. I could not recommend any product of any type higher than I recommend the Beltronics STi-R. The only drawback is that it picks up auto-opening doors on businesses near the road. These happen to be on K band and since the real threat (the police) are using Ka and Laser, I pretty much ignore the K band warnings at the locations where I expect them to occur.

Great for the highway saved me many times gives you about 10 seconds warning before cop is close enough to radar you. Also gives a heads up for photoradar vans sitting on the side of the road.
Sometimes it will pick up radar traps when it is 4 miles away from them.

Comments about Beltronics STi Driver Radar Detector:

I use the Beltronics Sti Driver as a daily Radar Detector. I find its performance to be rock solid across all bands and in all driving situations. In AutoScan mode it is not a overly noisy Detector due to K band and X band automatic doors. In Highway mode it is a beast and will give plenty of time to react to any speed trap ahead.
