Description

The Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector is the latest innovation from Escort

Escort is dedicated to continually improving their radar and laser detection products and the Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector is no exception. It provides the best long range protection against every known radar and laser gun in use in North America, but also incorporated GPS accuracy to silence each and every false alert. It is by far the most intelligent, fully automated radar and laser detector ever designed. You drive. It learns...end of story.

The Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector also comes pre-loaded with thousands of safety camera locations, including red light and speed-based cameras throughout North America. You can also download updates, back up your data, and stay on top of new threats directly from Escort's web site. Data subscription is an option and requires Windows XP, Vista or 7 (not compatible with MACs). Detector must be powered and connected to your PC before installing updates to the database.

More Product Features:

Brilliant Blue Display with 5 Levels of Brightness

Completely Immune to VG-2 "Detector-Detector"

Built-in Earphone Jack

TrueLock™ Signal Rejection permanently eliminates false alerts by location and frequency.

The PASSPORT 9500ix puts an end to false alarms. Its new GPS-powered TrueLock™ feature allows you to simply press the mute button a couple of times and never hear a radar-based automatic door opener or motion sensor again. Our patented design captures the location coordinates and the exact frequency of the signal and stores them in memory. Once stored, TrueLock™ will reject these signals, but it's intelligent enough to warn you of a new or different signal in that same location. That's right, no more false alarms!

Variable Speed Sensitivity provides real-time radar protection based on vehicle speed.

The Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector can automatically vary its sensitivity based on the speed of your vehicle. At interstate speeds, all radar bands are operating at full sensitivity, providing the best possible performance. At really slow speeds, like parking lots and stop lights, the sensitivity is turned down to almost zero. No more irritating alerts when you are going below the posted speed. The result is real-time, on-demand radar protection.

SpeedAlert™ provides vehicle speed during each alert.

The PASSPORT 9500ix provides all the information you need to make an intelligent decision during each and every alert. The radar or laser band, signal strength, and now your vehicle speed are displayed during an alert to help you make the best possible decision.

Mark Location stores speed traps and other locations in memory.

Speed traps and camera locations are everywhere. It's a stretch of highway where they always sit, or it's a back road that quickly changes from 45 mph to 25 mph within a few hundred feet. You don't always remember, but now your PASSPORT 9500ix will. The PASSPORT 9500ix's "Mark Location" feature allows you to quickly store a specific location in memory. Simply tap the "Mark" button a couple of times and the 9500i will store this location in memory. The next time you approach this area, the PASSPORT 9500ix will provide an alert well in advance to remind you of the potential danger. This specific location reminder could keep you from being ambushed by instant-on radar or laser the next time you approach.

AutoVolume automatically adjusts the alert volume based on ambient noise.

The PASSPORT 9500ix will adjust the alert volume level based on the ambient noise in the vehicle. Using a miniature microphone, the 9500ix monitors ambient noise and will increase the volume level automatically to ensure you take notice even with loud music, passenger conversations, or excessive wind noise. Now each alert will be heard so you can react if needed.

Crystal-Clear Voice Alerts provide users with a real voice alert option.

The PASSPORT 9500ix uses a Geiger-counter-like sound to indicate the signal strength and unique audible tones to identify each alert by band. Or, choose the PASSPORT 9500ix's new Voice Alert option for crystal clear communication of alerts and user controls.

The Direct Wire Cord provides a more permanent and concealed mounting option for your Escort or Bel radar detector. By tapping directly into a switched 12-volt power supply, this essential accessory will prevent loose cords from cluttering up your dash.

The Direct Wire SmartCord is another mounting solution for Escort and Bel radar detectors. Like the standard Direct Wire Cord, the SmartCord taps into your switched 12-volt power supply to free your dash from the cord clutter. It offers additional advantages as well. The SmartCord features a built-in alert lamp, pilot light, and convenient mute button so you can stay alert while keeping your focus on the road.

The Add-A-Circuit turns one fuse slot into two. This handy accessory plugs into any fuse slot, even if the slot has a fuse installed, and provides protection for both circuits. Ideal for use with the standard Direct Wire Cord or the Direct Wire SmartCord.

The Visor Clip Mount allows you to attach your radar detector directly to your sun visor. This accessory will keep your windshield free from mounts and other obstructions, resulting in a clear view of the road.

The Escort Accessory Kit includes a carrying case to protect your radar detector when not in use. You'll also receive an extra windshield mounting bracket and two extra sets of extra suction cups in case your originals become worn or damaged.

I've had the 9500ix for about 2 months now and it has saved me at least once already. I work nights so I do a lot of night driving.

Pros:
1) AutoLearn feature is nice - after about 3 false alerts it stores the location (using GPS) and frequency automatically for you. You can manually store(and unstore) locations also.
2) Update firmware and database through your computer and you can set/save your preferences also.
3) AutoVolume - in case you're listening to the radio it adjusts the volume so you can hear each alert.
4) AutoMute - so you don't have to hear the loud annoying 'beeping' alert for miles after the first few seconds it goes off.
5) Owner's manual is very good - explains everything (except how to update the firmware/dB).
6) Case - comes with a nice black case for storage.

Cons:
1) Pricey - of course the price! Come'on, maybe $300-350 would be a decent price and that's without a firmware/dB subscription! Tack on another $30 for a 3-year subscription (after the initial free 3 months of course).
2) Coiled SmartCord (included power cord) - Not so smart - OK, 2 things with this: a) The Smartcord (see picture below) has a blue power-on indicator light that is too bright while driving at night - it lights up the whole interior of car and is annoyingly blinding. The 9500ix has an AutoDim feature itself, but Escort failed to put that feature on their Smartcord. To fix this, I just turned the slanted part around in the cigarette lighter socket, away from me; AND b)Who wants a 'coiled' cord anyway? It's big, heavy, short and awkward - wth! Why not give us the Straight Smartcord instead, so I can at least try and hide it in the dashboard somehow. $30 to buy their optional Straight Smartcord - wth!
3) Cannot store 'Ka-band' locations - everyday I pass a mobile PennDoT electronic information sign parked at the same spot that sets off the 9500ix and I can't store the location, so I have to hear it go off on the way to/from work. It's not SWS(Safety Warning System) which uses K-band. Maybe Escort will make this a firmware update in the near future. I will check with them.
4) Does not come with a USB cord to hookup to a computer - fortunately I had one already or else I would've had to buy one - grrr.
5) Website firmware/dB updates (see 1 above also) - first, their website instruction videos are not very clear on some points and outdated. Secondly, after downloading their two file updates, you have to show their application where you downloaded them to on your computer in order to update your 9500ix - wth - kinda 'old-school' huh guys? Can't the 9500ix find the files itself and then update itself for that price?

The 9500ix is better than most radar detectors. Detection range is superb against all radar bands. The Autolearn feature has been known to randomly lock out real threats. Laser and I/O detection are poor. Other GPS features such as redlight camera locations and marked locations are useful. I would only get this radar detector if you do most of your driving in the city and if Ka is the only band used in your area.

9500ix with Live compared to Valentine

By TNT

About Me Commuter, Gearhead, Practical

Pros

  • Clear Alert
  • Neat Features or Extras

Cons

    Best Uses

    • City Driving

Comments about Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector:

I used the Valentine for nearly 20 years before I got this detector a month ago (it had been updated at least twice during that time.) I bought this mainly for the live feature, which I love. As more people get it, it will get even better.

The pros are the GPS feature and the voice alert, which the Valentine did not have. The Valentine also did not have the ability to learn false alarms and it did false a lot more.

I am going to run both detectors for a bit of a test. At this point, I believe the Valentine had more range, especially on K band. I have those radar signs by me that display your speed as you go past them. My Valentine use to pick them up a mile plus away, even in city driving. The passport does not get them that far.

Also, I do miss the arrows. When my Valentine use to go off, you knew where to look. When the Passport goes off it is a bit harder to find the source.

The live feature, while great, also needs to be tweaked a bit. For example, if I record a cop for other drivers benefit that is traveling on the highway, it keeps the alert in the same spot for a hour and a half. In that time the cop could be over 100 miles away. I am sure this will get better in time.

If I had to rate both detectors, I would give them both 4s for the reasons above. I wish I could use the Live with my Valentine, but I know that will not happen because they are two different companies. On long trips I may use both detectors, if they work well together.

Comments about Escort Passport 9500ix Radar Detector:

You can totally visor mount this and still get GPS signal no problem (took maybe 1 second later than if it was on the dash), and other reviews in [@] also say the same. But because of the button placement, you would need to velcro the Escort upside-down to a visor clip. I would also direct wire it to the auto-dim mirror using invisicord.I didn't much care for the shape and layout of the buttons. I decided to return this unit and get the Bel STi Magnum, since I would be driving thru Virginia next year and I need total stealth.I love the voice alerts and the blue display. But seriously, I would only need an RD while driving unfamiliar roads so the "marking locations of false signals" is not a feature I really need. In the city I would use my Garmin to tell me all the camera locations anyway. In the future I might want EscortLive and the direct wire kit for that is coming sometime Q1 2012. For now, I don't really need the GPS functions and stealth is more important. Otherwise this is a fabulous unit and I would give 4.0 stars (-1.0 for no cloth bag and useless suction mount).

          Customer Q & A

Q1: Does the Escort Passport 9500 ix radar detector come with a visor clip or just suction cups? I hear that suction cups are illegal in California

A: The 9500ix does not include a visor clip, just the suction cups. You can buy the clip on the web site...type ESO016 is the search box. And yes, glass mount detectors are technically a violation in California but I have not heard of anyone getting pulled over for it. I'm sure it happens but more likely its in connection with something more serious.

Q2: What is the main difference between the 9500i and 9500ix?

A: The 9500ix has 2 significant features over the 9500i - a) it is preloaded with a database of thousands of red light and speed camera locations and b) it has an "auto" learn system that identifies and eliminates false alerts.

Q3: Is a USB cord included with the 9500ix and does it cost to get database updates?

A: The USB cable is is not included with the 9500ix. Escort sells service plans in year increments. The price for the plan varies depending on how many years of database updates you would like to purchase. All database service plans go directly through Escort.
