You’re pulling into a shopping center and a detector with auto sensitivity senses your low speed and dials down the sensitivity of your detector so you’re not blasted with false signals from those automatic door openers.
You then leave and pull onto the highway. Then, your detector with auto sensitivity senses you’re at a higher speed and adjusts the sensitivity to maximum.
The result is a detector will provide you with extreme range when you need it, and will turn down its sensitivity on its own when you don't.
