Whistler CR85 Radar Detector Review

“A $200 plus radar detector with a $150 price tag” – Radar Roy

Choosing a radar detector in the under $200 price category which has the ability to protect you against police radar is extremely difficult and time consuming. Here is why.

The first thing you need to research is if the detector has the ability to sniff out instant on K and Ka-band at a reasonable distance.

The next thing you need to find out is the detector’s filtering capabilities so you’re not bothered by pesky false alerts caused by adaptive cruise control sensors that car manufactures are installing in new cars, which have a tendency to set off radar detectors.

Because of all this I have done all this research for you, and my findings are that there are only two radar detectors that I would recommend in the under $200 price category, the Whistler CR85 and the CR90.

Whistler CR85 Radar Detector Performance

Both the Whistler CR85 and CR90’s performance out ranks all of the other radar detectors we have tested in the under $200 price category.

Both the CR85 & CR95 will provide you with adequate time to slow down in most instant on encounters as it has over 2 times the capture distance of a police K and Ka radar gun.

Whistler CR85 Filtering Characteristics

If you have owned a radar detector you know how annoying false alerts can be as you pass by gas stations, convenience stores, and banks.

The problem with false alerts have significantly increased over the past several years because car manufactures have been installing “adaptive cruise control” sensors in many of their new cars that use the exact same K-band frequency police use.

To combat this issue some radar detector manufactures have added a delay feature, where it can take a few seconds for your detector to alert to a real threat. However, understanding the importance of having a detector to alert you in a timely fashion. Whistler took a different approach by using an incremental timing delay program.

Because of this the CR85 & CR90 are both able to alert you with ample time to react without all the bothersome false alerts like other detectors in this price range.

Another benefit of both the CR85 & CR90 is the Traffic Flow Signal Rejection (TFSR) feature.

By enabling the TFSR filtering both the CR85 & CR90 will block the signals from the traffic flow sensors installed on many highways, which will provide a more peaceful and enjoyable drive.

Clear Voice Alerts

The Whistler CR85 has clear voice alerts, providing you with the information you need without having to take your eyes off the road.

One feature we really like about the blue OLED display that it is a little larger than most. Making it much easier to read at any angle and the brightness is adjustable.

Whistler also includes a feature they call Radar Signature ID (RSID) which enables the CR85 to identify known police radar guns by frequency.

The three Ka-frequencies police radar guns use in the US are; 33.8, 34.7 and 35.5.

Because of this when your Whistler alerts with either one of these three frequencies you will know instantly its time to check your speed.

Good Performance Detector Without a Fancy Travel Case

Many radar detector manufactures will try to impress you by dressing up their detector in a fancy travel case and in the long run this case drives up the cost of the detector.

Instead Whistler does not include a vinyl case but instead packages their detector up in an environmentally friendly cardboard box.

The result is a detector that equals the performance of detectors in the $200 price category without a case that you may never use.

Easy Programming

You can program your Whistler CR85 by pressing the buttons to set the brightness of your display, the radar bands used in your area, adjust the filtering options, and more.

Included Accessories

The Whistler CR85 comes equipped with a power cord, a windshield mount, and reference guide.

4 of 5 The performance of my Whistler CR85 August 19, 2015
Reviewer: Tyler Turnbull from West Virginia
The performance of this detector is pretty good for how little it cost compared to some more expensive radar detectors.  It has a pretty fast reaction time to alerts and has decent range.  The bright blue display is pretty cool, I like it.  Overall for only being around 140$ it's a good budget, beginner's radar detector.
