The formula I’ve developed for this is the 4X Rule.
This means that your detector should have at least 4 times the range of a police radar gun's capture range.
So why is it so important to have a detector that can detect signals from so far away?
Well, because of Instant on radar.
Police
have the option of putting their radar gun into what is called “standby
mode,” which allows them to delay activating the gun until they have a
speeder within target range.
If your radar detector has at least
this 4X capture range, you have a greater chance of detecting the
officer's gun while it is still being activated, and as a result a
greater chance of avoiding a ticket.
Due to these factors, I have categorized the detectors that
appear on the bottom of this page as being good, better, or best.
