Radar detectors are essential tools if you a road warrior driving from place to place on the freeway or interstate and want the best way to protect yourself from speeding tickets.
If most of your time is spent driving on the highway, your #1 consideration when one of the best radar detectors, is the sensitivity and range of the radar detector as well as responsiveness to brief appearances of instant-on police radar.

Your #1 consideration when choosing a radar detector for constant highway driving is the sensitivity and range of the detector.
The formula I’ve developed for this is the 4X Rule.
This means that your radar detector should have at least 4 times the range of a police radar gun's capture range which is typically 4000 feet when the traffic enforcement officer is stationery and about one fourth that distance when patrolling.
So why is it so important to have a detector that can detect signals from so far away?
Police
have the option of putting their radar gun into what is called RF-hold or “standby
mode,” which allows them to delay activating the gun until they have a
speeder within target range.
If your radar detector has at least
this 4X capture range, you have a greater chance of detecting the
officer's gun while it is still being activated, and as a result a
greater chance of
avoiding a speeding ticket. The best radar detectors today have the ability to detect radar at 12 or more times the effective targeting range, far more than what was thought possible 10 years ago.
All the radar detectors shown below meet these requirements and will serve you well. Some models have more features than others, but it in terms of sensitivity, every one of them has plenty of range.
